Children's respite services

The service provides overnight care for children with complex health needs and/or learning disability in adapted accommodation or in their own home.

Overview of the service

Care is provided 24 hours a day as identified by the health professional that referred you. We also provide nursing services into some special needs schools.

Objective of the service 

The aim of the service is to provide direct support to parents/carers in providing respite from their caring needs and support of the child's health and social needs. We provide personal care, monitoring of the child's specific health needs, a wide range of activities ensuring that each child meets identified outcomes, communication and feeding input (oral or enteral) and support with therapy programmes.

Inclusion criteria

  • Children aged 5 to 18 years
  • Complex health needs or learning disability
  • Referred from Health Commissioners or Borough Social Services

Exclusion criteria

  • Children with complex behavioural needs

All referrals come from local authority or CCG. If you require this service, please speak to your GP.

Is transport provided?

No, children are brought to the unit by school transport or their parents but have access to two adapted vehicles during their stay so that they can participate on outings.

Are home visits available? 

All new referrals are offered an assessment visit at home
